How does a qualifying life event affect enrollment eligibility?

A QLE triggers an SEP, allowing enrollment or plan changes outside Open Enrollment according to the event.

A QLE stops all enrollment until next Open Enrollment.

A QLE guarantees immediate subsidy eligibility regardless of MAGI.

Qualifying life events create a Special Enrollment Period that lets you enroll in or change Marketplace plans outside the usual Open Enrollment window. The exact timing and rules for this SEP depend on the event (for example, losing coverage, getting married, or having a child often triggers a limited-period opportunity to enroll or switch plans).

Subsidy eligibility, such as premium tax credits, is based on income relative to the federal poverty level (MAGI) and household size. A qualifying life event does not automatically grant subsidies or make you eligible for them regardless of MAGI. You may qualify for subsidies if your MAGI falls within the subsidy-eligible range, but it isn’t guaranteed simply because a QLE occurred.

So a QLE mainly opens a Special Enrollment Period for enrollment outside Open Enrollment, while subsidy eligibility remains a separate, income-based determination.

A QLE extends Open Enrollment by 30 days automatically.
